Digital Technology
Digital Technology at St Pius X School
Digital technology is an integral part of learning and life in the 21st century. At St Pius X School, we embrace technology to enhance educational opportunities, prepare students for the future, and foster responsible digital citizenship. We aim to equip our students with the skills and knowledge to navigate the digital world safely and effectively, while also recognising the importance of balance and wellbeing.
How We Use Digital Technology at School:
- Learning Enhancement: We integrate digital tools and resources across the curriculum to make learning engaging, interactive, and accessible. This includes Chromebooks in our senior classes, and the i-pads in our junior classes.
- Creative Expression: We encourage students to use technology for creative projects, presentations, and multimedia productions.
- Communication and Collaboration: We utilise digital platforms to facilitate communication and collaboration between students, teachers, and parents. Each class is set up as a Google Classroom that allows teachers and students to work online and share ideas.
The Role of Parents in Supporting Digital Learning:
Parents play a crucial role in helping children develop healthy and responsible digital habits.
Open communication and active involvement are key. Here are some ways you can support your child's digital learning journey:
- Talk about online safety: Have regular conversations with your child about online risks. Encourage them to come to you if they encounter anything concerning online.
- Set clear expectations and boundaries: Establish rules about screen time, online activities, and appropriate online behaviour. Consistency is important.
- Be a role model: Demonstrate responsible and balanced technology use in your own life.
- Stay informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest online safety advice and resources. The following New Zealand websites offer valuable information and support:
- Netsafe: https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting/ (Provides comprehensive online safety information for parents and children)
- Ministry of Education: https://www.education.govt.nz/ (Search for "digital safety" or "online learning")
- Explore online resources together: Engage with your child's online learning platforms and discuss what they are learning.
- Create a balanced digital diet: Encourage a variety of activities, including outdoor play, hobbies, and social interaction.
- Monitor online activity (with respect for privacy): Be aware of what your child is doing online, but also respect their privacy. Open communication is more effective than secret monitoring.
At St Pius X School, we are committed to working in partnership with parents to ensure our students have a positive and safe experience with digital technology. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
